Universal search

Universal Search helps you find what you need, and find it easily: search everything, feeds and apps. You can also track topics by saving results as a new App with continually updated search streams to help you save time.

You can enter a simple keyword or a complex query (topic).
The search box uses auto-completion and will help you with a list of relevant parameters.
Here is the query syntax you can use:

Display articles that have been tagged with the specified tag.
The tag feature is not available for VIP.

Display articles that have been published from the specified date.

Display articles that have an enclosure* (true) or have not (false).
*enclosures are multimedia attachments to articles (pdf, mp3, etc).

Display all articles whose links to “marvel.com”.

Display all articles from the website twitter.com.

Display articles belonging to the specified channel.

Display articles from a particular author to the specified feed.

Preview the results

Once you have entered your query/topic, press the Enter key of your keyboard. A preview menu will appear with the 5 first articles found.
You have 2 options for Articles results:

  • Save tracked topic: it will add a new App on your dashboard. You will be able to read all the articles via the feedreader (1)
  • See all, refine & analyze: you will see the list of all the articles found, and you will be able to refine them (2)

You can also search on Apps (HTML editor, Webnote and Todo list apps). Results will appear under Articles (3). A click on the app will focus it on you dashboard.

Faceted exploration

When clicking on the See all, refine & analyze button, a page will appear.

On this page, you'll find all results from your query.
You can edit the original query by clicking on the 3 different parameters on the left panel (4): Within, Topic and Period.
Filters, on the right panel (5), will allow you to refine your search, based on 10 facets.
If you click on any facet value, it will refine your search to this value. You can click on as many values as you want, each one will be added as an “AND” condition to your query.

Tracked Topics

Once you have refine your query, you will be able to track this topic by saving results in a new App with continually updated search streams. Just click the “Save tracked topic” button (6).
The page results will close, and the Tracked Topics App will be added in your current tab.
Become a Premium user to analyze this search (7).

You can also create an RSS feed from any Tracked Topic app:

  • Click on the four-dot Edit button on the header of any Tracked Topic app (1)
  • Click on Export (2)
  • Click on RSS feed (3)

It will open the RSS feed in a new tab of your browser.

Tagging

After searching relevant content via Universal search and saving it to your dashboard (Tracked Topic App), Tagging allows you to add as many tags as you wish to any article and associate sentiments to your tags so you can express your opinion.

Add tags to an article

To open the Tag panel, click on the tag icon on top of any article. This will open a new panel on the right side of your Dashboard. Notice that you can hide this panel by simply clicking on the grip on the top left of the panel. Click again to restore it.

In the Tag panel, you'll find the following sections:

  • Add: an input box that allows you to add a new tag (1).
  • Existing: all tags already entered by you (2).
  • Popular: popular tags for all articles (3).
  • Recent: recent tags used by you (4).

When you add a new tag (whether through the Add box or by picking an existing one), you will be presented with a list of sentiments. Simply pick one to link it to the tag and give it meaning. Each sentiment is associated with a color so everyone can quickly see what the sentiment is.

Import any article from the internet

If you are reading articles outside your dashboard, you can still easily add tags to it thanks to the Bookmarklet.
First of all, you have to drag and drop the “Add to my dashboard” button (5) to your browser favorites.
Then, when you are reading an article, click on the “Add to my dashboard” favorite (6).
The Netvibes tag panel will appear on the right of the article (7).
Select the right dashboard you want to tag on (8).

Manage your tags

  • Click on “Dashboards” menu on the topbar
  • Select “Manage…”
  • Click on the Netvibes Premium / Manage Premium tools menu


On this page, you will be able to:

Tags

  • See all the tags added on your dashboards (1).
  • Export the articles list by tag (2).
  • Edit tag label (3).
  • Remove tag (4).
  • Add directly a new tag (5).

Sentiments

  • See all the sentiment added (6).
  • Edit sentiment label and color (7).
  • Remove sentiment (8).
  • Add a new sentiment (9).

Suggestions

Suggestions help you to distinguish article that talks about a keyword you want to track

  • See all the suggestions added (10).
  • Edit sentiment label and color (11).
  • Remove sentiment (12).
  • Add a new sentiment (13).

Now, when an article will mention the keyword you have added, the suggested tag will be displayed in the Edit SmartTags panel and under the title of the article.
You can also add several suggestions in once by importing a CSV file with the following format: keyword,tag. (14)

Blacklists

If you think articles from a certain website is “polluting” your sources, you can blacklist it.

  • See all the domains, authors, or article you have blacklisted from your dashboard (15)
  • Edit a domain/author (16)
  • Remove a domain/author (17)
  • Add a new domain or author to blacklist (18)

Export

Export all the articles tagged from a particular period. Click on the Export button (19), it will download a csv file with the following details:

  • Tag
  • Sentiment
  • Username
  • Date of tagging
  • URL of the article tagged
  • Date of publication of the article

Other features

Duplicate tabs

Lets user duplicate any tabs of his dashboard. The copy created will have the exact same parameters (same apps, same tracked topics, etc).

Open the Tab settings, and select the “Duplciate” button. Duplicated tab will appear next to the original tab.
